? The Misstep of Reading Business Books Without Action ?
Over the years, an opinion of mine has become more of a conviction: Most people reading business books are doing it wrong.
Let me share why.
Diving into a business book without being actively engaged in the relevant business activities is like trying to understand a map without ever setting foot on the path. The essence, the real value of these insights, often goes unnoticed.
Here’s the method I’ve found to truly capture the wealth of knowledge these books offer:
Work: Engage in your business, face the challenges, celebrate the victories.
Read and Work: Integrate reading into your business journey. Allow the lessons to parallel your experiences.
Continue the Cycle: Keep reading as you work, in parallel (if you can resist the urge to apply every concept immediately).
Why this approach? Reading alongside working helps you sidestep potential pitfalls. Yet, it’s the act of working that deepens your understanding of what you’ve read.
After 14 years leading in the business world, revisiting books I once read illuminates how much deeper these lessons resonate now. My experiences have provided a real-world backdrop against which the advice from these pages comes to life. I can now debate with the author in my mind, recognizing where insights hold true and where my journey has led me to different conclusions.
To those finding themselves skimming through business books, searching for relevance, remember: the true magic lies in the interplay between learning and doing.
Don’t read it like a fairy tale; treat it as a guide on a journey you’re actively undertaking.
Let’s shift the paradigm on how we consume the wisdom from these pages. It’s about action as much as it is about insight.
What’s your take? Have you found certain books only clicked after diving into the work?
